The degree of literary incompetence that Willis is showing here is astounding! I remember my own short-stories that I wrote in my 8th grade and embarrassing as they were they actually seem a bit more skillfull!Īre the later books in the series all like that? If so I might spare myself the torture of reading Blackout/All Clear. I can't believe that this book won a Hugo alongside Vinge's 'A Fire Upon the Deep' and was picked over Robinson's 'Red Mars'. A history textbook is a more riveting read than this monstrosity. Jeromes Three Men In A Boat is one of the highest points of Inimitable British Humor.

There is literally nothing in the story so far that I am finding remotely interesting with the sporadic exception for the use of Middle English. 'Willis effortlessly juggles comedy of manners, chaos theory and a wide range of literary allusions with a near flawlessness of plot, character and prose.' -Publishers Weekly (starred review) 'I have long thought that Jerome K. Whether in the past or in the present the narrative is mostly pointless and repetitive and drags on far more than is necessary and decent. Halfway through the novel the drop tech is still repeating ominously sounding phrases between calling for one of the main characters 'to tell him something is wrong' and then immediately falling back into unconsciousness. The novel consists mostly of incoherent ramblings describing in painstaking detail the most inconsequential details while deliberately avoiding getting to the damn point of the story. In the Oxford of Christmas, 2054, time travel is a well-established tool of historical research.

I am currently halfway through the novel and I am fighting with myself not to put it down. READ REVIEW DOOMSDAY BOOK by Connie Willis RELEASE DATE: JSecond solo novel (following Lincoln's Dreams, 1987) from an author best known for her strong stories (the collection Fire Watch, etc.). I finally picked the book as my initiation to the Oxford time travel series and I must say I have done it with some enthusiasm seeing as Willis has received numerous accolades.
